Severalty Policy

Summary

Surveying of lands on Piapot, Muscowpetung, and Pasqua reserves into forty acre lots was begun on June 10th.

Implications
The policy of severalty was created to eliminate the tribal system, specifically by creating family-run farms, replacing communal farming. This policy was part of the government's plan of assimilation by implementing capitalist systems on reserves, which required undermining values of collectivity and replacing them capitalist values of individualism and self-interest. For additional information on its effects, please see other database entries on the Severalty Policy.
