Abstract
In Russell Taylor's first interview, he describes his late adolescence and his enlistment in the armed forces. Taylor recalls that his friends had dared him to enlist at the age of 17 in the First World War. He says that because of his age he had to tell the recruiter that he was 18. Due to his small stature, he was enlisted as a bugler because he was too small to carry a rifle. Once he was sent to England, he traveled to the Somme (in France) and Vimy Ridge. He touches on trench warfare, his own injury, healing, returning home, and finding employment in a lumber camp.
