Summary
In 1720 a limited outbreak of Smallpox hit the British post at York Factory, MB.
Implications
The endemic was limited and failed to spread inland. The infection of the Swampy Cree (also known as the Homeguard Cree, Maskekon or Lowland Cree) marked the first contact the Cree had with Smallpox. Disease would play a large role in the newly changing social, political, and economic landscape of the Plains. Due to increased contact and disease, there would be large population losses, and a desire to negotiate healthcare clauses in treaties (specifically Treaty 6).
