Riot at Fort Walsh

Summary

Cree groups in the Cypress Hills staged a riot at Fort Walsh protesting their treatment, particularly the lack of rations being supplied them. The North West Mounted Police had little success in controlling this riot.

Implications
Riots similar to this one over rations and aid were not uncommon. The Canadian Government would withhold and limit rations however they saw fit (which was used as a tool to control and assimilate Indigenous peoples), and in dire circumstances Indigenous peoples were left with no other option than to forcibly take rations or face starvation, disease, and death.
