George Gordon Reserve Surveyed

Summary

A 30720 km reserve was surveyed for the George Gordon band. When surveyor Will Wagner first visited the George Gordon band to survey their reserve, they stated that they did not want to have a reserve assigned until they had held a council with the other Chiefs whose bands were planning to settle in the Touchwood Hills. Wagner attempted to impress upon them that they must look out for their own interests, but the George Gordon band still refused to have their reserve surveyed until later that year.

Implications
The disagreement between Wagner and the Chief of the George Gordon band represents the contrast of worldviews between self-interested, individualistic Western capitalism and the holistic and communal well-being emphasized within Indigenous philosophies. Wagner perceived the former to be superior, which was in keeping with the assimilationist attitudes of government officials.
