Reserves Surveyed for Assiniboine near Fort Qu'Appelle

Summary

Government surveyor J.G. Nelson arrived at Fort Qu'Appelle to begin surveying reserves for the Assiniboine groups who were on their way from Fort Walsh to Fort Qu'Apelle. The Ocean Man band requested that their reserve be placed at Swimming Lakes, because of the large quantity of fish there. When Man Who Took the Coat (Carry the Kettle) had their reserve surveyed in 1884, the chief requested that their reserve include some of the land that had been abandoned by Piapot. It was decided that this section of land should be shared between Man Who Took the Coat and Long Lodge. The reserve surveyed for Man Who Took the Coat was 9 miles east-west and eight miles north-south.
