Outbreak of Scarlatina and Measles Across Southern Saskatchewan

Summary

This excerpt was taken directly from the Department of Indian Affairs Annual Report for the year ending December 31st 1880: "With the exception of an outbreak of small-pox during the summer among the Algonquin and Tetes de Boule Indians living on the Reserve situated at the junction of the Rivers Gatineau and Desert, in the Province of Quebec, and some cases of measles among the Indians of the Riding Mountains, in the North-West Territories, and cases of measles and scarlatina in an encampment near Fort Walsh, there were no infectious diseases among the Indians during the past year. In all of the above instances prompt measures were taken by the Department for the relief of the sufferers. Measures are in progress for a general vaccination of all the Indians in the Dominion upon whom that operation may not have been successfully performed within the last seven years."
