Metis Delegation Convinces Louis Riel to return to Canada and Lead their Resistance

Summary

A delegation of Metis arrived on June 4, 1884 at St. Peter’s Mission near Great Falls in Montana, where Riel had been teaching. They requested that he come with them to lead a resistance against the government. Riel agreed to return to Canada. Canadian Government officials quickly became aware of this envoy to get Riel, on June 6, 1884 Northwest Territories Lieutenant Governor Edgar Dewdney met with Charles Nolin who outlined that the Metis desired alterations to the North West ordinances. Nolin wanted to wait for Riel’s advice until making any definitive requests.
