Summary
A group of American traders attacked a Nakota camp in the Cypress Hills, killing at least 26 people over an alleged theft of horses. Incidentally, the horses were not stolen, rather, they had walked away from their owners.
Implications
The Cypress Hills Massacre instigated the creation of the North West Mounted Police, as the Canadian public and Government's concerns over an "unprotected border" were evident following the conflict. The North West Mounted Police were created to police and provide services to the west as the Canadian Government prepared for settlement while also changing the lives of Indigenous peoples in the region.
