Development of the fur trade along the Sasktachewan River

Summary

During the 1770s, the fur trade on the Plains had developed in an unregulated and chaotic way. Regular abuses of Indigenous producers by settler traders included physical violence and murder.

Implications
The Plains saw a spike in violence as competition over the fur trade intensified. By 1779 it was too dangerous for HBC employees to travel on the Plains, even though HBC employees traditionally had better relationships with Plains Indigenous people than non-Indigenous traders.
